Register for a self-build home

In 2015, the Government passed a bill requiring councils to keep a register of people and organisations interested in self-build and custom-build.

Self-build and custom housebuilding are both processes where an individual or group are involved in building or designing their own home. The register is intended to identify the number of people interested in self build and custom build, and to help circulate information about suitable sites to interested parties.

To apply for entry on the register, you must be:

  • Seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in the authority’s area to build a house to occupy as that individual’s sole or main residence.
  • Aged 18 or above.
  • A British Citizen, a national of a European Economic Area (EEA) state other than the United Kingdom, or a national of Switzerland.

Please note that being included on the self-build register does not guarantee that a suitable plot will become available.

To add your name to the register, please complete the form below:

Once planning permission is granted to a suitable site, the council will contact the owner to establish if they wish to have the site advertised to those on the register. If so, members on the register will be informed of the details of the development site, and given the contact details of the land owner. If they are interested in the site, they can contact the land owner to enquire about purchasing the land.
